How China's lottery actually works
Mainland China bans almost all gambling. The only large-scale legal exceptions are two state-run systems: the China Welfare Lottery (中国福利彩票 / 福彩) and the China Sports Lottery (中国体育彩票 / 体彩). Super Lotto (大乐透) is the flagship draw of the China Sports Lottery (体彩). Both run official sales, draws and prize rules under tight government supervision, with proceeds earmarked for public causes — social-welfare projects for 福彩, sport and public-fitness programmes for 体彩.
A few things make China genuinely different from Western lotteries:
- Physical tickets only. Online lottery sales have been banned since 2015, so 95%+ of tickets are bought in cash at 200,000+ licensed outlets — you pay face value, no brokerage fee.
- Strictly 18+. Tickets aren't sold to minors and prizes aren't paid to minors.
